If you watch enough HGTV, you begin to actually believe you can install a backsplash in an afternoon, replace your laminate floors with hardwood in an evening and transform your kitchen in a weekend. The problem is, the space between the “before” and “after” is often longer than you think, and living without a kitchen is not a pretty picture.
There are a few things you can do to make any Louisville kitchen remodel easier. Preparing yourself beforehand makes all the difference when your weekend project turns into a month-long DIY marathon.
Louisville Kitchen Remodeling Tips
- Pack
If you are painting or replacing any cabinets, sort, pack,
and label your kitchen gear so you can find
it easily when you need it.
- Find a Temporary Kitchen
If you have a dining room, that can be a great place for a makeshift kitchen. If not, you can use the garage, basement, or backyard. Prepare your makeshift kitchen with the basics (i.e. toaster, microwave, electric grill, slowcooker, etc.) Set out a small set of dishes (or paper plates) and utensils. Organize everything in plastic tubs in an area that can remain (somewhat) undisturbed).
- Meal Plan
Identify your alternative cooking options using electric appliances, outdoor cooking, or no-cook meals. Eating out all day may sound great at first (and Louisville has become a food lovers paradise), but it will inevitably get old (and expensive). However, you do not need to be a nutrition counselor to think of alternative ways to survive your kitchen remodel. If possible, you can make meals ahead of time that can be reheated in the microwave. Keep plenty of non-perishable snacks on hand, and a cooler of cold drinks.
- Timing
If you have the ability to choose, plan your remodel for a time of year when the weather is warm. An outside grill and a kiddie pool for dishes makes things much easier and allows you to continue to prepare most meals outside.
- Pet Plan
If you have pets, find a safe place for them to spend their time during the remodel. It can be disruptive to both workers and pooches to have their space invaded.
- Family Meals
Even if your home is literally in demolition mode, keep family routines as close to normal as you can. Use a blanket or tablecloth to make a picnic (indoor or outdoor) and maintain family meals as much as possible. Keeping this important ritual can help children deal with havoc and help parents remember what is the most important after a long day of renovation headaches.
